India newborn twins named Corona and Covid after coronavirus pandemic

A couple in India's central state of Chhattisgarhhave named their newborn twins Corona and Covid, in honor of the prevailing circumstances of their birth - the coronavirus lockdown in India. The twins, a boy and a girl, were born on March 27, two days after India's central giovernment ordered a nation-wide lockdown. "The delivery happened after facing several difficulties and therefore, my husband and I wanted to make the day memorable," Preeti Verma, the 27-year-old mother of the twins, told news agency Press Trust of India. She said her and husband had no help as their relatives could not reach Raipur as a result of the lockdown. "With vehicular movement stopped, we both made it to the hospital somehow late at night after a lot of suffering. Since the deliveries happened after such difficulties, we wanted the names to be memorable and unique," she told the DPA news agency. China Hits a Coronavirus Milestone: No New Domestic Infections in 24 Hours

The Chinese government has reported that all of the new infections recorded in China on Wednesday, March 18, were importations. This is the first time China has had no new domestic infections since the coronavirus outbreak started in Wuhan, China. China recorded 34 new cases on Wednesday, all overseas arrivals. The China Daily reported that once there have been no new cases for 14 days, the lockdown on Wuhan may be lifted. China recorded eight more deaths - all in Hubei. The country's coronavirus death toll now stands at 3,245. More than 81,000 coronavirus cases have been reported in China but most have recovered as only 7,263 are still sick.

Asia hit by second wave of coronavirus cases

Asia had successfully contained the coronavirus outbreak in the continent, or so it thought, but the number of new cases are spiking across Asia - a second wave of coronavirus infections following weeks of declines. As such, officials in south-east Asia, South Korea, Taiwan and parts of China are taking new measures to prevent the importation of cases from other parts of the world. The number of imported infections are on the rise as people are fleeing Europe - the new epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak. Ben Cowling, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Hong Kong said: "What many people hadn't recognized is that it is only a temporary success, it is not a permanent success. "There is a challenge to containment by the increasing number of imported infections in all of these locations at the moment from Europe, but in the future, it could be from other parts of the world as well," he added.
