A couple in India's central state of Chhattisgarhhave named
their newborn twins Corona and Covid, in honor of the prevailing circumstances
of their birth - the coronavirus lockdown in India. The twins, a boy and a
girl, were born on March 27, two days after India's central giovernment ordered
a nation-wide lockdown.
"The delivery happened after facing several
difficulties and therefore, my husband and I wanted to make the day
memorable," Preeti Verma, the 27-year-old mother of the twins, told news
agency Press Trust of India. She said her and husband had no help as their
relatives could not reach Raipur as a result of the lockdown.
"With vehicular movement stopped, we both made it to
the hospital somehow late at night after a lot of suffering. Since the
deliveries happened after such difficulties, we wanted the names to be
memorable and unique," she told the DPA news agency. The couple
decided to name the kids Corona and Covid after hospital workers began calling
them that way.
"Besides, these names are beautiful in their own, with
Corona being Latin for crown," added Vinay Verma, the father. "Also,
we want the fear associated with these names to end and the public to focus on
sanitation and hygiene."
The couple is however under pressure from their relatives to
change the names, and they say they may rename their children.
India currently has 3,082 coronavirus cases and 86 deaths.
The country's 1.3 billion inhabitants are under a three-week lockdown due to
end on April 14. The population is only allowed to make trips to supermarkets
and pharmacies.
