Swedish Music Legend Avicii Dead At 28

Avicii, whose real name is Tim Bergling, died on Friday April 20, 2018 in Muscat, Oman. Tim was born in Stockholm, Sweden, on September 8, 1989, to Klas Bergling and Anki Liden. Tim chose the moniker Avicii - which means "the lowest level of Buddhist hell" because his real name was already being used upon creating his Myspace page. In Buddhism, Avici is a hell where the dead who have sinned will be reborn after enduring punishment. Avici can be equated to purgatory in Catholicism. Tim added the extra "i" to Avici to distinguish himself from a different Avici on MySpace.
There are still many unanswered questions about the Electronic Dance Music legend's death but the two autopsies carried out by Oman police reveal no foul play or criminal intent. His death sent shock waves throughout the entire music industry with tributes pouring in from all corners of the world. Many are left wondering how he could die so young with so much potential and aspirations. Swedish mourners in Stockholm paid tribute to the late DJ with a minute of silence on Saturday, April 21.
Avicii is pictured above with fans in Muscat. Avicii's death was confirmed last Friday with the release of a statement from his representative. It read, "It is with profound sorrow that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii. He was found dead in Muscat, Oman, this Friday afternoon local time, April 20. The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given."
Tim's brother, David Bergling, a hotelier in Sweden, traveled to Oman a few hours after learning of his brother's passing to "search for answers". David checked into a hotel in the Omani capital, reportedly about 15 minutes away from Muscat Hills - the resort where Avicii was lodged during his vacation.
Avicii's heartbroken family broke their silence today (three days after his death) thanking all those who honored the Swedish EDM (Electronic Dance Music) legend.

The family's statement read, "We would like to thank you for the support and the loving words about our son and brother. We are so grateful for everyone who loved Tim's music and have precious memories of his songs. Thank you all for the initiatives taken to honour Tim, with public gatherings, church bells ringing out his music, tributes at Coachella and moments of silence around the world. We are grateful for the privacy during this difficult time. Our wish is that it continues that way."
Avicii's most popular hits are Wake Me Up, Hey Brother and Levels. He retired from touring in 2016 for health reasons. He suffered from acute pancreatitis which led to the removal of his gall bladder and appendix in 2014. He wrote an open letter to his fans in 2016 addressing his retirement from touring. The following are excerpts from his letter. "I know I am blessed to be able to travel all around the world and perform, but I have too little left for the life of a real person behind the artist." "I will however never let go of music - I will continue to speak to my fans through it, but I've decided this 2016 run will be my last tour and last shows."
Tim is survived by his parents, his sister, Linda Sterner, and his brothers, Anton Korberg and David Bergling. May your soul rest in peace, Avicii.

The finger-cutting tradition of Indonesia's Dani tribe

The death of a loved one is always an extremely painful thing to bear, and people of different cultures grieve in diverse ways, some more unique than others. A typically unique way of grieving is that of the Dani (an Indonesian tribe). Finger-cutting is a fundamental part of grieving for women of the Dani tribe, and pertains to their women only. According to The Globe and Mail, an estimated 250,000 Dani tribe members live in a town named Wamena, in the extremely remote central highland area of Papua Province. Wamena is only accessible by plane.  Upon the death of a loved one, the top joint of one of a woman's fingers would be amputated, and smear ashes and clay across their faces. Prior to amputation, a string would be firmly tied to the upper half of the woman's finger for 30 minutes, to cause numbness. This was to reduce the pain from amputating the tip. In most cases, the responsibility of cutting off the top joint of the finger is assigned to one of the woman's
