It was a Latino music festival at the Super Bowl
Halftime show. The rhythms were irresistible. Shakira and J-Lo sang with
exultant voices and danced fiercely through a quick-cutting mix of their mega
hits. Guest performers Bad Bunny from Puerto Rico and J Balvin from Colombia
accompanied the shimmying pop conquistadoras. It was an exhilarating Puerto
Rican and Colombian show all through!
Shakira opened
the show with "She Wolf", then a medley of her hit songs including
"Empire", "Whenever, Wherever", "Chantaje" and
"Hips Don't Lie". To the surprise of many, the Colombian songstress
launched into Cardi B and J Balvin's "I Like It", singing it with Bad
Bunny. Cardi B was in Hard Rock stadium watching live. Shakira sang in both English and Spanish, belly-danced, danced to a variety of Afro-Latin musical genres and crowd-surfed. She also performed a traditional Arab vocal expression known as a "zaghrouta". She thoroughly represented her Colombian and Lebanese heritage.
Jennifer Lopez
then hit the stage, arriving on a skycraper spire to start her setlist with
"Jenny From the Block". Demonstrating her pole dancing and salsa skills,
J-Lo performed a mini-set that included "Ain't It Funny", "Get
Right" and "Waiting for Tonight". J Balvin joined J-Lo for a
joint performance of "Que Calor" and "Love Don't Cost a
Thing". The pair then switched to Balvin and Beyonce's hit "Mi
Gente". Beyonce, Jay-Z and their eldest daughter were watching the
performance live. J-Lo transitioned to "On The Floor" as J Balvin
exited the stage.
Lopez's
daughter Emme Maribel Muniz and a choir of children, some in lighted cages,
performed a slowed-down and moving rendition of J-Lo's "Let's Get
Loud" and a snippet of Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A."
J-Lo wrapped herself in a coat that featured both the Puerto Rican and American
flags, a nod to her heritage.
Shakira and
Lopez sang the ending of "Let's Get Loud" and a segment of Shakira's
"Waka Waka" together. Shakira then finished performing "Waka
Waka" on her own, and danced to some Congolese guitar and New York mambo.
Lopez returned with a conclusion to "Let's Get Loud", then she and
Shakira ended their performance with a hug. They had just made history. They
had become the first Latinas to headline Super Bowl Halftime show.
