62-year-old
George Hood, a former U.S. marine and DEA special agent has achieved an
incredible feat. He has set a new male world record for longest time in the
abdominal plank position, breaking the pre-existing Guinness World Record of
eight hours and 1 minute set by Mao Weidong in China in 2016. Hood held the
plank for eight hours, 15 minutes and 15 seconds. Hood finished off his
record-breaking plank challenge with 75 push-ups. He announced his retirement
from plank record attempts after breaking Mao Weidong's record.
While holding the
abdominal plank, he used his phone, watched multiple presentations and had full
conversations. Rock music played while he held the plank. He told the BBC:
"When I was growing up, I was fascinated with rock and roll - Van Halen,
Motley Crue, Deep Purple. I would watch their videos when MTV came out and it
fascinated me.
"I always
just wished I could be a rock star, just for 24 hours to live that dream - the
limo rides, the buzz, the hype," he added.
"I can
assure you, for those eight hours, 15 minutes and 15 seconds, I was that rock
star."
The ex-marine
started planking in 2011 and trained for seven hours a day ahead of the event.
He had to follow a strict fitness routine and took part in several training
camps, during which he completed a total of 674,000 sit-ups and 270,000
push-ups. Hood told CNN: "It’s 4-5 hours a day in the plank pose.
"Then I do
700 push-ups a day, 2,000 sit-ups a day in sets of a hundred, 500 leg squats a
day. For upper body and the arms, I do approximately 300 arm curls a day."
Dana Glowacka
hold the record for the longest abdominal plank held by a woman, having held
the abdominal plank for four hours, 19 minutes and 55 seconds in 2019.
