UK coronavirus death toll passes 40,000 as 357 more people die

In the UK, 357 persons died from Covid-19 on Thursday, taking the country's official total death count to 40,261. Figures from the UK's Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal a much higher death toll, suggesting the UK's death toll from the virus currently exceeds 50,000. The UK is the second country to report more than 40,000 deaths; the first being the US with more than 108,000 fatalities. Italy, previously Europe's worst-hit country, has recorded 33,600 deaths from Covid-19. So far, about 5.2 million people have been tested in the UK, with 283,311 people testing positive.

Mexico reported 1092 coronavirus deaths on Wednesday

On Wednesday, June 3, Mexico's coronavirus death toll soared, more than doubling Tuesday's toll (470 fatalities). 1,092 new deaths were reported.  Health undersecretary Hugh Lopez-Gatell said that some of the deaths recorded on Wednesday had occurred more than two weeks earlier but weren’t recorded, which explains the huge increase in deaths.  3,912 new coronavirus cases were recorded on Wednesday. Mexico now counts 101,238 cases and 11,729 deaths, making it the seventh country with the most deaths from the virus.

Brazil tops 30,000 coronavirus deaths with a record 1,262 fatalities in the last 24 hours

On Tuesday, June 2nd, Brazil recorded a staggering 1,262 deaths in 24 hours, surpassing 30,000 deaths. Brazil officially counts 31,199 deaths from coronavirus, and has the fourth highest death toll from the virus after the US, Britain and Italy. Yesterday, 28,936 new infections were recorded, taking the overall number of confirmed cases to 555,383. Brazil is the second most affected country after the United States. On Tuesday, Sao Paulo recorded its highest daily death toll and highest number of daily infections. Cities across Sao Paulo began reopening offices and shopping malls yesterday. As of now, Sao Paulo counts close Yesterday, Brazil's president, Jair Bolsonaro, told supporters outside the presidential palace in Brasilia that he regrets each of the deaths, "but that's everyone's destiny."

No coronavirus deaths in Spain in 24 hours for second consecutive day

For the second time in close to three months, there has been no coronavirus death recorded in Spain in 24 hours. On Monday, Spain's health officials also reported no death from the virus. So far, Spain has recorded a total of 27,127 deaths from the virus, and a total of 240,000 cases. In a news conference, Emergency health response chief Fernando Simon described the new milestone as being "very, very encouraging". Only 71 new coronavirus cases were reported on Tuesday. "We are in a very good place in the evolution of the pandemic," he said."The statistics are following a trend. They are going the right direction."

Brazil: 33,234 new Covid-19 cases and 956 Covid-19 deaths in 24 hours

As of Sunday morning, Brazil had recorded 33,000 new coronavirus cases and 956 deaths from the virus, taking their total number of cases closer to 500,000 (498,440) and total number of fatalities from the virus to 28,834. Brazil now has the fourth-highest coronavirus death toll in the world, and the second-highest number of cases. Only the US has more cases (1.77 million).  Brazil's deaths curve is much steeper than those of countries like France, the UK and Italy. In Brazil, the number of deaths has been doubling about every two weeks. In the UK, it doubled every two months, in France, every four months. Brazil President Bolsonaro has called for Brazil's football season to reason despite the sharp increase in the number of new cases. He also mingles with hundreds of supporters in Brasilia without a face mask on.
