In an interview
broadcast by Portuguese television channel TVI, Cristiano Ronaldo opened up
about his relationship and rivalry with Lionel Messi. Both players are
considered to be two of the greatest players in football history. In the
interview, Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo said his rivalry with the Barcelona
ace has pushed him to become a better player. "I really admire the career he has had so far and,
for his part, he has already said that he had trouble when I left the Spanish
league because it is a rivalry that he appreciates,” he said.
"It is a good rivalry that exists in football, but
this is no exception.
“Michael Jordan had rivals in basketball, Ayrton Senna
and Alain Prost were great rivals in Formula 1, the only common point between
all the big rivalries in the sport is that they are healthy.
"Messi makes me a better player and vice versa.”
Both players
have five Ballon d'Or awards each, and share nine Champion League titles - five
for Ronaldo and four for Messi. Messi however trumps Ronaldo's league title
record, he has 10, and Ronaldo, five.
Fans tend to
think Messi and Ronaldo share a frosty relationship nut both have often sat
next to each other during Ballon d'Or ceremonies. Ronaldo has written off those
rumors by extending a dinner invitation to Messi.
"I have an excellent professional relationship
with Messi because we have been sharing the same moments for 15 years,” he
added.
"I have never been to dinner with him but why not
in the future? I would have no problem with doing that."
