Cristiano Ronaldo loses bid to get $200,000 lawsuit by his Las Vegas rape accuser heard in secret or thrown out
Kathryn Mayorga accused
Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo (last year) of raping her in
Las Vegas hotel suite over a decade ago (June 2009). Ms Mayorga claimed after
her and Ronaldo danced in the VIP area of the Rain nightclub - in the glamorous
Palms Casino Resort where she worked - Ronaldo then raped her in his luxury
suite before paying her $375,000 in "hush money".
Last week,
lawyers revealed they will "decline to prosecute" 10-year-old claims
against the footballer because the allegations "cannot be proven beyond a
reasonable doubt". The Juventus striker has firmly denied the rape
allegations from day one.
Ms Mayorga is
now suing Ronaldo for $200,000 in damages - she claims Ronaldo or a worker of
his allowed the hush settlement they had to become public last year. Ronaldo's
legal team unsuccessfully argued that releasing court records related to the
matter would have "weaponized the allegations in this case", and also
damage Ronaldo's reputation, and jeopardize his promotional endorsement contracts.
Ronaldo tried
to get Ms Mayorga's lawsuit dismissed or heard in secret but lost the bid. On
Friday, Judge Jennifer Dorsey rejected the claims, saying "the cat is
already out of the bag about Mayorga's allegations.
"I'm not satisfied that Ronaldo's interest in
holding Mayorga to her agreement is enough to justify sealing the entire record
in this case," she continued. Nonetheless, she referred to the settlement
between Ronaldo and Mayorga in 2010 a confidential contract between private
parties. “The
documents themselves and direct quotes from any of them will remain sealed,”
she added.
