Roxette
singer Marie Fredriksson has died, aged 61.
Her management company, Dimberg Jernberg Management in a statement said she had
died on Monday, Decemer 8th "following a 17-year long battle with
cancer".
She was successful as a solo artist in her native
Sweden before partnering with Per Gessle to form Roxette in 1986. Some of
Roxette's greatest hits include Joyride, The Look and It Must Have Been Love.
Fredriksson was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2002, after collapsing in her
kitchen following a workout. The tumor cost her vision in her right eye but she
recovered after treatment and returned to music making and touring in 2008. She
was advised by her doctors to stop touring and focus on her health in 2016.
In a heartfelt statement, her Roxette partner
said, "Thank you, Marie, thanks for everything.
"You were an outstanding musician, a master of
the voice, an amazing performer. Thanks for painting my black and white songs
in the most beautiful colors. You were the most wonderful friend for over 40
years.
"I'm proud, honored and happy to have been
able to share so much of your time, talent, warmth, generosity and sense of
humor. All my love goes out to you and your family."
"Marie leaves us a grand musical legacy. Her
amazing voice -- both strong and sensitive -- and her magical live performances
will be remembered by all of us who was lucky enough to witness them,"
said her manager, Marie Dimberg in a statement.
