Barcelona becomes highest-paying sports team with new Messi deal

The latest Global Sports Salaries Survey reveal that La Liga champions, FC Barcelona, are the first sports team to pay its first-team players an average salary of more than £10 ($13,755,714) million per year. The Catalonia giants lastly topped the survey in 2012, when their average wage was half of the current sum. This season, Barcelona will pay its 23-man squad an average of £10.45, before bonuses.
The additions of Philippe Coutinho, Arthur, Malcom and Arturo Vidal have greatly contributed to these exorbitant figures, alongside Messi's bumper new contract. His new contract, signed in November 2017, pays him a basic £50 million ($64.2 million) per year before tax. His contract makes him the best paid player in the club's history. Gerard Pique, Sergi Roberto, Sergio Busquets and Samuel Umtiti also signed new contracts with the club.

European champions Real Madrid are second on the list, with an increase in the average salaries of their first-team stars to £8.1 million per year. Juventus come in the 9th position, following their acquisition of Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid last summer. This has enabled them rise from 32nd to ninth position.
Manchester United are the only Premier League team in the top 10, earning the tenth spot. They pay their first-team players an average of £6.53 million per year. This is a considerable rise from their 23rd position in 2017. Nonetheless, the Premier League is the highest-paying football league globally, with their players earning an average salary of £2.99m, just over £700,000 per year ahead of La Liga. The other six teams in the top 10 are NBA franchises. The NBA remains the highest-paying sports league with an average annual salary of £5.9 million ($7.8 million).

The finger-cutting tradition of Indonesia's Dani tribe

The death of a loved one is always an extremely painful thing to bear, and people of different cultures grieve in diverse ways, some more unique than others. A typically unique way of grieving is that of the Dani (an Indonesian tribe). Finger-cutting is a fundamental part of grieving for women of the Dani tribe, and pertains to their women only. According to The Globe and Mail, an estimated 250,000 Dani tribe members live in a town named Wamena, in the extremely remote central highland area of Papua Province. Wamena is only accessible by plane.  Upon the death of a loved one, the top joint of one of a woman's fingers would be amputated, and smear ashes and clay across their faces. Prior to amputation, a string would be firmly tied to the upper half of the woman's finger for 30 minutes, to cause numbness. This was to reduce the pain from amputating the tip. In most cases, the responsibility of cutting off the top joint of the finger is assigned to one of the woman's...
