Barcelona talisman
Lionel Messi just added two more pieces of silverware to his already
overwhelming collection of awards. Messi was named La Liga's best player and
top goalscorer for the 2017/2018 campaign at the MARCA Awards. He was awarded
the Alfredo di Stefano Award for most valuable player and the Pichichi Trophy
for highest goalscorer. The Blaugrana No. 10 has now been named La Liga's best
player seven times, and the league's highest goalscorer 5 times. This year's
MARCA Awards ceremony held in the Convent dels Àngels in
Barcelona.
Messi spoke
to MARCA after the ceremony. He talked about watching football with his eldest
son, Thiago, his return from injury, and the competitiveness of La Liga. "I love watching games with him. I was surprised
because he understands so many facets of the game and it's the first time I've
been able to share something like that with him [Thiago]," he said.
Talking about
his return from injury, he further said, "At first I was a bit scared of contact and getting hit by the ball. But
after some time I started feeling more and more comfortable. I was looking
forward to getting back out on the pitch."
The top sixon La Liga charts are separated by four
points, and Messi thinks such close competition is a bonus. He said La Liga is
"more competitive than ever" and he hopes La Liga remains as
competitive as it currently is. In his words, "It's good that
the league is like this.
"It's more competitive than ever, anyone beats
anybody, it's good for the spectators.
"I hope it stays that way for a long time."
Jan Oblak, Atletico's goalkeeper won the Trofeo Zamora
for the third consecutive year. In last season's La Liga outings, he conceded
just 22 times in 37 games. Valencia's coach, Marcelino, was awarded the Trofeo
Miguel Munoz for best coach. Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas was presented the
Trofeo Zarra award for the highest scoring Spanish player.
La Liga president Javier Tebas praised Messi, telling
people at the MARCA Awards that Messi had done more for La Liga than anyone
else. He voiced out his wish to name a La Liga award after Messi, in honor of
his legacy. "It
would depend on Leo Messi but I'd love to have a LaLiga award in his name. No
one has brought more to LaLiga than him and if he finishes his career in Spain,
or most of it, I don't believe anyone has contributed more to the competition.
Yes, the fact Cristiano Ronaldo has gone to Serie A means he's even more
important," he said.
French artist Michael Raivand also had a great surprise for Leo Messi - a portrait of Messi (painted live during the awards ceremony).
