Valencia shocked their
hosts, Barcelona, during Saturday's La Liga fixture. Valencia took a two-goal
lead before half-time against La Liga leaders Barcelona. A Kevin Gameiro goal
and a Dani Parejo penalty saw Valencia dominate the first twenty minutes of the
game. Lionel Messi scored for a ninth consecutive match, a brace this time,
which earned Barcelona a 2-2 draw against Valencia. Messi reduced
Valencia's lead with a brilliant equalizer at the 26th minute, and got
Barcelona level at the 64th minute.
Jordi Alba's presence was greatly missed in
the first half of the game - Barcelona are much better at attacking when they
have Alba as an outlet on the left flank. The face of the game completely
changed once he stepped in, in the second half.
50 - Lionel Messi is the third player in @LaLigaEN history to score 50 penalty goals, after Cristiano Ronaldo (61) and Hugo Sanchez (56). Milestone. pic.twitter.com/7oDJL2BhFT— OptaJose (@OptaJose) February 2, 2019
Messi had to
come off to receive treatment on the sideline after being hit in the right
thigh by Los Che's Antonio Lato, in the 70th minute. In a post-match press
conference, Ernesto Valverde addressed the issue, saying, "Between tomorrow and the day afterwards we'll need
to see exactly how he is and what he has."
"I don't exactly what it is.
"It could be a small discomfort.
"We'll wait to see what the doctors say."
Messi may only need a day's rest as it is believed that he suffered a
muscle spasm. He may be able to join the rest of the squad on Monday as they
train ahead of Wednesday's Copa del Rey match against Real Madrid.
9 - Lionel Messi has scored in each of his last nine games for @FCBarcelona in all competitions (11 goals), his best goalscoring run since January 2013 (10). Spectacular. pic.twitter.com/57In3qsQQ6— OptaJose (@OptaJose) February 2, 2019
Messi has now
scored 21 goals in La Liga this season, with today's goals taking Barcelona six
points clear of Atletico Madrid, though Atletico Madrid could reduce the margin
to three points if they beat Real Betis on Sunday.
