Barcelona captain Lionel Messi was awarded his sixth Golden
Shoe on Wednesday at a ceremony in Barcelona. The said award is given to the
player who scores the most league goals across Europe’s top leagues. The Golden
Shoe award was created in 1967 when it was won by Eusebio.
This happens to be Messi’s third successive Golden Shoe
award. Messi scored 36 goals in 34 appearances in the 2018-19 La Liga season. Receiving
the award on the 16th of October was special for Messi and Barcelona
as it was the 15-year anniversary of his Barcelona debut. Messi has two more
Golden Shoes than Cristiano Ronaldo who last won the award in the 2014-15 football
season.
Messi received the award from his sons Thiago and Mateo. His
wife Antonella Rocuzzo supervised the handing of the award by the couple’s
sons. Messi thanked his family and colleagues after receiving the award,
saying: "Thank you all for being here
to all those present, especially my family. Luis [Suarez] and Jordi [Alba] are
here today, two big helps for me to receive this award. Without my team-mates I
wouldn't have been able to receive even one of these, it's a recognition of the
entire team."
Talking of La
Liga, Messi said: "The Champions League is something special,
obviously, but the league is the most important thing, it's what makes you feel
good in the later rounds of the Champions League and the cup. At Barcelona we
always aim to win everything."
