Italy’s deaths from coronavirus reducing – 602 deaths today

On Monday, March 23, Italy recorded 602 new coronavirus deaths, taking its death toll from the virus to 6,078. The number of deaths in Italy have dropped consistently for the past two days, after Saturday’s all-time high of 793 deaths. The number of new cases increased by 11%, from 59,138 to 63,928 – an increase of close to 5,000 cases. The number of recoveries have also increased from 7,024 on Sunday to 7,432 on Monday. The oldest woman to have recovered from the virus is a 95-year-old grandmother. The number of cases in the US have grown beyond 35,000 and number of deaths closer to 500, according to John Hopkins University data.

Coronavirus in Spain: 462 fatalities in 24 hours

Spain's Health Ministry, on Monday March 23, provided new grim statistics on the coronavirus in Spain. 462 people died on Sunday - a 26% increase on the previous tally of 1,720 deaths - taking the country's total number of deaths to 2,182. The number of cases also grew from 28,572 cases to 33,089.  There has also been a surge in intensive care patients as 2,355 persons are in intensive care - a 30% increase in number of ICU patients. Spain's deputy Prime Minister, Carmen Calvo, has been hospitalized for respiratory issues and is being tested for coronavirus. 3,310 medical professionals have already been infected with the virus in Spain.

Italy reports 651 new coronavirus deaths as toll nears 5500

On Sunday, March 22, Italy recorded a slightly smaller number of deaths than she recorded on Saturday. 651 new deaths were recorded on Sunday, taking Italy's death toll from the pandemic to 5,476. The average age of the dead is 78.5 years. There was a 10.4% rise in the number of confirmed cases (+5,560 cases), which took the country's total of confirmed cases to  59,138.  Italian Civil Protection Service chief Angelo Borrelli told reporters: "The figures announced today are lower than those for yesterday. "I hope and we all hope that these figures can be borne out in the coming days. But do not let your guard down." Lombardy has accounted for approximately two-thirds of Italy's coronavirus deaths since the outbreak of the virus in Italy but only accounted for 30.4% of the new infections recorded on Sunday. Spain reports 394 coronavirus deaths in 24 hours

Spain has recorded a 30% increase in coronavirus deaths in the last 24 hours with 394 new deaths. The country's official death toll is now 1,720. After Italy, Spain is the worst-hit country in Europe. The number of confirmed cases also rose by 14.6% - 3,646 new cases - to 28,572 cases. Spanish health officials have warned that the number of new cases will rise further in the coming days. 1,785 people are currently being treated in intensive care units for the virus. “We must prepare ourselves emotionally and psychologically for very hard days ahead,” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez told the nation in a televised address late on Saturday. “We have yet to receive the impact of the strongest, most damaging wave, which will test our material and moral capacities to the limit, as well as our spirit as a society,” he added.

Italy reports 793 coronavirus deaths in 24 hours

Italy has recorded its largest daily spike in coronavirus deaths since the start of the coronavirus outbreak in Italy. There were 793 deaths in the last 24 hours, taking Italy's total number of deaths to 4,825. There was also a 13.9% surge in its number of new coronavirus cases, a rise from the previous day's 47,021 to 53,578. Lombardy is the most critically hit region in Italy, with 3,095 deaths and 25,515 cases so far. Lombardy accounts for more than 605 of Italy's latest deaths.  Police were deployed across the streets of Rome on Saturday, checking documents and fining those who had no valid reason to be outside. 

Spain's coronavirus death toll surpasses 1,300 with almost 25,000 confirmed cases

Data from Spain's Health Ministry reveal a surge in Spain's death toll from 1,002 on Friday to 1,326 on Saturday - more than 300 deaths. The number of confirmed cases also rose from 19,980 on Friday to 24,926 on Saturday morning - an increase of more than 5,000 new cases. Madrid - the Spanish capital - is the most affected region, and counts almost 9,000 cases and 804 deaths. Spain now has the third most confirmed infections after China and Italy. Spanish Health Minister Salvador Illa said the army will assist in setting up a field hospital of 5,500 beds and intensive care units inside a convention center in Madrid. According to the World Health Organization, recovery takes two weeks for mild cases and up to six weeks for severe cases. A Johns Hopkins University tally has established the global death toll from Covid-19 to be 10,000+ with the total number of registered cases exceeding 244,000, and 86,000+ recoveries - mostly in China.

Coronavirus in Germany - 18,361 cases, 52 deaths - explaining Germany's low coronavirus death rate

As of March 20, 2020, Germany has recorded 18,361 coronavirus cases, but only 52 deaths from the virus, a fact that baffles many. Germany has a fatality rate of just 0.3%, a sharp contrast to Italy's 7.9%. Some experts think Germany has such a low death rate from the virus because they are at an earlier stage of the pandemic, and its death rate may increase with time. Rampant testing and early detection is a plausible reason to some scientists. Dr. Mike Ryan, health emergencies director at the World Health Organization (WHO) said: Germany has had a very aggressive testing process. So the number of tests maybe detecting more mild cases." Regarding Italy's high death rate, he said: "Italy has a much older population. And in many ways Italy is the poster child for living longer lives, but unfortunately in this case having an older population means the fatality rate may appear higher." Friday, March 20, Italy's death toll keeps skyrocketing. In the last 24 hours, 627 people have lost their lives in Italy. 5,986 new cases were also recorded - the highest 24 hour surge in cases and deaths recorded since the outbreak of the virus in Italy. The total number of coronavirus cases recorded in Italy stand at 47,021 and total number of fatalities, 4,032. The army has been deployed in northern Italy to help move corpses as funeral services are overwhelmed. So far, the virus has claimed more than 10,400 lives worldwide, and has now reached every continent in the world, except Antarctica. So far, 87,351 people have recovered from the virus.

Coronavirus in Spain: Death toll surges past 1,000

As of Friday, March 20, at least 1,000 people have died from the Covid-19 disease in Spain. Spain has become the fourth hardest-hit country, after China, Italy and Iran. A nationwide state of emergency was declared in the country on Saturday. Around 20,000 people have been infected in Spain, while 1,588 people have recovered. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has ordered the closure of all hotels in the country and has promised to implement special measures in nursing homes. On Wednesday, March 20, a Foreign Office spokesperson announced: "The Spanish government have confirmed that all hotels will close in Spain from Tuesday 24 March. "We therefore advise British travellers in Spain to contact their tour operator or airline as soon as possible, to arrange their return journey home before this date." In Madrid, 80% of inhabitants expected to get Covid-19, official says

Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the president of the Madrid region in Spain, estimates that eight out of every ten persons in the Spanish capital Madrid will get the Covid-19 disease. She said "they will have mild symptoms," but pointed out that "it will be a problem" for 15% of the people that make up vulnerable population. In an interview on Spanish radio, she said: "This virus has been in Spain for a longer time and is going to spread to practically everyone, and in most, it will not leave lasting marks. But the problem is the vulnerable population." She said the disease was "lethal" for the elderly who have underlying health issues. Covid-19 "can end the life of a person who is in the vulnerable population group," she added. Italy overtakes China's coronavirus death toll with 427 more deaths in 24 hours

On Thursday, March 19, Italy recorded 427 more deaths from the coronavirus pandemic, taking its total number of deaths to 3,405. This figure shows that Italy has overtaken China's death toll as China report a total of 3,245 deaths. So far, there have been more than 220,000 coronavirus cases recorded in the world and more than 9,000 deaths. The total number of coronavirus cases in Italy have increased by 14.9%, from the previous count of 35,713 to 41,035. Italy to prolong coronavirus lockdown beyond April 3

On Thursday, March 19, Italy's Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced that Italy would be extending its lockdown beyond the current end-date of April 3. PM Conte discussed the issue in an interview with Italy's record newspaper  Corriere della Sera . Conte said the country's strict nationwide quarantine measures "can only be extended". "We have avoided the collapse of the system, the restrictive measures are working, and it is obvious that when we reach a peak and the contagion will start to decrease, at least in percentage terms, we hope in a few days, we will not be able to return immediately to life as before," he added.  Italy was put on lockdown by her government since March 10, with closure of schools and universities set to continue till April 3. Coronavirus in France: 1404 new cases in 24 hours

On Wednesday, March, 18, French health agency director Jerome Salome gave new reports about the coronavirus outbreak in France, at a press briefing. He said the number of new infections from the virus had risen to 9,134, up from 7,730 on Tuesday - an increase of 1404 new cases. He added that 931 of the country's coronavirus cases were critically sick, needing life support. The death tally from the virus also increased by almost 51% as 89 new deaths were registered. The new death tally stands at 264. France is in its second day of lockdown and the government has deployed around 100,000 police and gendarmes across the country to enforce lockdown rules. People are only allowed to leave home for officially sanctioned reasons like getting medical treatment, shopping for necessities and going to work. Globally, more than 205,470 people have been infected with the novel coronavirus, and more than 8,500 of those have died as per a Johns Hopkins University report.

Coronavirus in Spain: 13,716 cases, 558 fatalities

On Wednesday, March 18, Spain's tally of coronavirus cases rose from a previous tally of 11,178 cases to 13,716. The number of fatalities rose from 491 on Tuesday to 558 on Wednesday, as reported by Fernando Simon, the head of the country's health emergency center. Spain Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez spoke to a near-empty parliament that contained only 28 lawmakers and five ministers in a chamber that normally houses a 350-strong assembly. The number of attendees was drastically reduced to avoid the possibility of propagating the virus in parliament. "We have never lived through anything like this. And our society, which had grown used to changes that expand our possibilities of knowledge, health and life, now finds itself in a war to defend all we have taken for granted," Sanchez said. Italy has experienced a 16% increase in deaths from coronavirus over the last 24 hours as it reported 345 new deaths. However, it has experienced its slowest rate of increase - 12.6% - since the outbreak of the virus on February 21. The number of coronavirus cases rose from 27,980 to 31,506 over the past 24 hours. Italy remains the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in Europe. According to the World Health Organization, the virus has infected 184,976 people and killed 7,500 and counting. Data collected by Johns Hopkins University show that close to 80,000 people have recovered from the Covid-19 disease. Italy will be rushing 10,000 student doctors into service, as they won't be taking their final exams, in a bid to help its overburdened health workforce cope with the coronavirus onslaught.

Coronavirus in Italy: Death toll surpasses 2,000

On Monday March 16 2020, Italy reported a 12% rise in its coronavirus cases from Sunday to reach 23,073. The Italian Civil Protection Department also recorded a sharp increase in the number of deaths from the coronavirus - 349 new deaths. The death toll of the coronavirus in Italy now stands at 2,158. The global death toll from the coronavirus pandemic stands at more than 6,500 deaths, as reported by the WHO. Italy has recorded the highest number of deaths from the coronavirus in Europe and also has the highest number of cases. Europe is currently the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic with ever-growing numbers. On Monday, the Italian government approved a €25 billion package for economic measures like incentives for workers who risk losing their jobs due to the prolonged lockdown.

Global Deaths from Coronavirus Surpass 6,500

Estimates from Johns Hopkins University show that the novel coronavirus has killed more than 6,500 people and infected more than 150,000 people. Measures are being taken worldwide to curb the spread of the coronavirus as the pandemic continues to ravage societies and economies. Egypt which relies heavily on tourism will be suspending all flights in Egyptian airports starting Thursday to curb the spread of coronavirus in the country. State media reports that the Egyptian government has already suspended schools and universities for two weeks. Portugal's Minister of Internal Affairs Eduardo Cabrita revealed that borders between Spain and Portugal will be closed, leaving only nine active crossings open to allow for the transit of workers and goods that are required to cross the border by the end of Monday (today).
