On Thursday, March 19, Italy's Prime Minister Giuseppe
Conte announced that Italy would be extending its lockdown beyond the current
end-date of April 3. PM Conte discussed the issue in an interview with Italy's
record newspaper Corriere della Sera. Conte said the country's
strict nationwide quarantine measures "can only be extended". "We
have avoided the collapse of the system, the restrictive measures are working,
and it is obvious that when we reach a peak and the contagion will start to
decrease, at least in percentage terms, we hope in a few days, we will not be
able to return immediately to life as before," he added.
Italy was put on lockdown by her government since March 10,
with closure of schools and universities set to continue till April 3. The
lockdown will be extended beyond the aforementioned dates, with no end-date
provided as yet. PM Conte said: "It is clear that the measures we have
taken, both those which have closed much of the country's corporate and
individual activities, and those affecting the schools, can only be extended
beyond the deadline."
