On Sunday, March 22, Italy recorded a slightly
smaller number of deaths than she recorded on Saturday. 651 new deaths were
recorded on Sunday, taking Italy's death toll from the pandemic to 5,476. The
average age of the dead is 78.5 years. There was a 10.4% rise in the number of
confirmed cases (+5,560 cases), which took the country's total of confirmed
cases to 59,138.
Italian Civil Protection Service chief Angelo
Borrelli told reporters: "The figures announced today are lower than
those for yesterday.
"I hope and we all hope that these figures can be borne out in the
coming days. But do not let your guard down." Lombardy has accounted for
approximately two-thirds of Italy's coronavirus deaths since the outbreak of
the virus in Italy but only accounted for 30.4% of the new infections recorded
on Sunday. However, 360 out of the 651 deaths in Italy yesterday came from
Lombardy.
The Italian government has taken sterner measures to clamp down on the
spread of the virus, ordering the closure of all non-essential businesses and
banned the movement of citizens across municipalities other than for "non-deferrable and proven
business or health reasons or other urgent matters".
