The finger-cutting tradition of Indonesia's Dani tribe

The death of a loved one is always an extremely painful thing to bear, and people of different cultures grieve in diverse ways, some more unique than others. A typically unique way of grieving is that of the Dani (an Indonesian tribe). Finger-cutting is a fundamental part of grieving for women of the Dani tribe, and pertains to their women only. According to The Globe and Mail, an estimated 250,000 Dani tribe members live in a town named Wamena, in the extremely remote central highland area of Papua Province. Wamena is only accessible by plane.  Upon the death of a loved one, the top joint of one of a woman's fingers would be amputated, and smear ashes and clay across their faces. Prior to amputation, a string would be firmly tied to the upper half of the woman's finger for 30 minutes, to cause numbness. This was to reduce the pain from amputating the tip. In most cases, the responsibility of cutting off the top joint of the finger is assigned to one of the woman's...

Violence against the Girl Child and the Preventive Role of the SDGs

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child defines a child as: a “human being below the age of 18 years, unless under the law applicable to that child, majority is attained earlier.” Violence against the girl child, also known as gender-based violence refers to violent acts that are primarily or exclusively committed against children. A steady improvement has been observed in the girl child’s life but many girls are still subjected to horrific practices like female genital mutilation, sexual exploitation and abuse, and child marriage. Son preference often results in female infanticide. For centuries, adolescent girls (and even younger girls) have been forced into marriage, usually with men many years their senior.  Child marriage puts girls at risk of sexual, physical and psychological violence throughout their lives. Globally, girls who marry before 15 are 50% more likely to face physical or sexual violence from a partner. Sadly, child brides are more likely...

Maurizio Sarri compares Hazard's Chelsea impact to Messi's at Barcelona

In assessing Eden Hazard's performance for Chelsea in their 2-1 victory at Watford, Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri brought up Barcelona ace Lionel Messi. Hazard crossed a century of Chelsea goals in the Blue's triumph at Watford, being the lone goalscorer for Chelsea in the game. The 27-year-old forward is looked upon as a talisman in Chelsea, and has been directly involved in 19 Premier league goals in 18 games this season, the most for any player in the league. Given Hazard's crucial importance to Chelsea, Sarri qualifies Hazard's importance to that of Messi and Ronaldo to their respective teams. "He is very important for us. Messi is very important for Barcelona," said Sarri. "Hazard scored twice today. He is very able to open space for his team-mates."
