Italy has increased its highest surge in coronavirus deaths
today, March 18. The total death toll in Italy stands at close to 3,000.
Lombardy is the worst hit region in Italy, and recorded 319 deaths in 24 hours.
There are 35,713 coronavirus cases in the country, of which 4,000 have
recovered. At least 8,758 people have died from the Covid-19 disease
worldwide.
Italy was put on lockdown about two weeks ago to halt the
spread of the virus and its citizens have been asked to stay indoors. The
number of deaths and new infections however keep rising.
Pope Francis told
Italy's La Repubblica newspaper in an
interview: "During these difficult days we can find small, concrete
gestures expressing closeness and concreteness towards the people closest to
us, a caress for our grandparents, a kiss for our children, for the people we

13,716 cases and 598 fatalities
- Germany:
8,198 cases and 12 deaths

7,730 cases and 175 deaths
