Spain's total
number of confirmed coronavirus cases have risen from 5,700 on Saturday to
7,753 on Sunday, and its death toll has more than doubled from 136 deaths on
Saturday to 288 on Sunday. Spain is the second hardest-hit European country in
Europe after Italy. According to Spain's Health Ministry, around half of all
infections are concentrated in the capital of Madrid.
Spanish Prime
Minister Pedro Sanchez announced a partial lockdown on Saturday as part of a
15-day state of emergency. As such, citizens can only step out of their homes
to go to the hospital, to work, to go to the pharmacy or for emergencies. In a
nationally televised address, Sanchez said: "We will (eventually) return
to the routine of our jobs and again visit our friends and loved ones.
"Until that
time comes, let’s not waste energies that are essential now. Let’s not lose our
way.
The coronavirus
is now present in at least 144 countries in the world, as the pandemic keeps
gaining momentum.
