On Tuesday, March 17, 2020, Spain reports a sharp surge in
its number of coronavirus cases. Fernando Simon, the head of the country's
health emergency center said the number of cases rose from 9,161 on Monday to
11,178 on Tuesday. He said Spain has recorded 491 fatalities since the
coronavirus outbreak in the country. Madrid has the highest number of
coronavirus cases in Spain - 4,871 cases, with Catalonia coming second on
1,394. 1,028 people have reportedly recovered from the Covid-19 disease in
Spain.
The EU will be banning all non-essential cross-border
travel across Europe's Schengen free-travel zone. The ban will last for at
least 30 days.
