Coronavirus: Spain records more than 1,500 new cases in less than 24 hours

Coronavirus infections in Spain have increased from 4,231 cases on Friday night to 5,753 today, a steep increase of more than 1,500 new infections. Fatalities in Spain now stand at 136. Spain is the second most affected country in Europe after Italy which has more than 15,000 cases. According to local media reports, the Spanish government will announce a lockdown as part of a national state of emergency.

Authorities in Madrid and its environs have ordered the closure of most shops, bars and restaurants with the exemption of shops selling food, pharmacies and petrol stations.

France has confirmed 3,661 cases and 79 deaths, Germany - 3,675 cases and eight deaths. The UK has less coronavirus cases - 798 confirmed cases and 11 deaths. With the total number of deaths from the coronavirus pandemic reaching about 5,000, WHO Director General Dr Tedros described the milestone as being "tragic".

"Europe has now become the epicenter of the pandemic, with more reported cases and deaths than the rest of the world combined, apart from China," he said.

"More cases are now being reported every day than were reported in China at the height of its epidemic."
