Coronavirus
infections in Spain have increased from 4,231 cases on Friday night to 5,753
today, a steep increase of more than 1,500 new infections. Fatalities in Spain
now stand at 136. Spain is the second most affected country in Europe after
Italy which has more than 15,000 cases. According to local media reports, the
Spanish government will announce a lockdown as part of a national state of
emergency.
Authorities in
Madrid and its environs have ordered the closure of most shops, bars and
restaurants with the exemption of shops selling food, pharmacies and petrol stations.
"Europe has
now become the epicenter of the pandemic, with more reported cases and deaths
than the rest of the world combined, apart from China," he said.
"More cases
are now being reported every day than were reported in China at the height of
its epidemic."
