Cameroon is the first Central
African country and overall eighth African country to confirm a coronavirus
case. It is the fourth country in sub-Saharan Africa to report a case after
Nigeria, Senegal and South Africa. The first confirmed coronavirus case in Cameroon
is a 58-year-old French citizen who arrived Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon on
February 24th. He has been quarantined at the Central Hospital of Yaoundé. On
March 6th, Cameroon's health minister Manaouda Malachie issued a statement
announcing the case.
It read: "The Minister of Public Health announces the
confirmation of a case of COVID-19 in Cameroon. He is a 58-year-old French
citizen who arrived in Yaoundé on 24 February 2020.
The
active surveillance put in place by the country since the occurrence of the
Covid-19 outbreak has made it possible to detect this case.
The
case was placed in solitary confinement in the Care Centre of the Yaoundé
Central Hospital for appropriate treatment.
The
minister of Public Health reassures public opinion that all measures are being
taken by the Government to contain the possible risks of the spread of the
virus.
Hence,
the Minister of Public Health urges everyone to be vigilant and respect hygiene
rules.
In
addition, a press conference will be given as soon as possible for more
information; the toll-free number "1510" remains open."
There
are now 29 coronavirus cases in the African continent. According to the World
Health Organization, there are 95,200 confirmed coronavirus cases globally,
with a death toll of close to 3,300 cases. COVID-19 has now spread to over 80
countries since its emergence in Wuhan city in China (in December 2019).
